good morning ladies and gentlemen:
the title of my speech today is “the doors that are open to us ”.
the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. “i got the highest mark in the mid-term examination!” she said. dont be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45.
last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. “this was the wisest decision i have ever made,” she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.
“compared with the late 70s,” she says, “now college students have many doors.” my aunt cannot help but recall her first college experience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the cultural revolution. she was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a tv factory.
i was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job. look at us today! so many doors are open to us! i believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. and my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities.

during his presidency, bill clinton seized important opportunities on issues from welfare to free trade. he was a tireless champion of peace in the middle east. he used american power in the balkans to confront aggression and halt ethnic cleansing. and in all his actions and decisions, the american people sensed a deep empathy for the poor and the powerless. shortly before leaving office, president clinton said, "christ admonished us that our lives will be judged by how we do unto the least of our neighbors." throughout his career, bill clinton has done his best to live up to that standard. and americans respect him for it. at every stage of his remarkable life, president clinton has made and kept countless friends, who share in the joy of this day. and three people in particular have the largest part in this remarkable story. one day more than 30 years ago, inside the yale law library, a fellow student walked over to bill clinton and said, "if you're going to keep staring at me, and i'm going to keep staring back, we ought to at least know each other's name. mine's hillary rodham. what is yours?"that was a good day for both of them, and the beginning of a partnership unique in american history. so today, we honor the former first lady of arkansas, the former first lady of america, the united states senator from new york, senator hillary rodham clinton.
perhaps the clintons' greatest achievement is their daughter, who moved into the white house as a young girl, and left as an accomplished young lady. it's not easy to be a teenager in the white house, but it's a lot easier when you have a loving mother and a loving father that chelsea clinton had.
this magnificent presidential library, and the american life it celebrates, would not have been possible without the love and sacrifice of a special lady. among his heroes, president clinton always includes his mother, virginia kelley, "a working woman and a widow." virginia was there when her son took the oath of office, and we know that she would be incredibly proud of this day.
the story that began in a little house on hervey street in hope, arkansas is the kind of story that inspires people from every background, all over america. in this great nation, it is always possible for a child to go as far as their talent and vision can take them. visitors to this place will be reminded of the great promise of our country, and the dreams that came true in the life of our 42nd president. the william j. clinton presidential library is a gift to the future by a man who always believed in the future. and today, we thank him for loving and serving america.

since the quality of honesty applies to all behaviors, one cannot refuse to consider factual information, for example, in an unbiased manner and still claim that one's knowledge, belief or position is an attempt to be truthful. such a belief is clearly a product of one's desires and simply has nothing to do with the human ability to know. basing one's positions on what one wants — rather than unbiased evidence gathering — is dishonest even when good intentions can be cited — after all even hitler could cite good intentions and intended glory for a select group of people. clearly then, an unbiased approach to the truth is a requirement of honesty.
because intentions are closely related to fairness and certainly affect the degree of honesty/dishonesty, there is a wide spread confusion about honesty--and a general belief that being dishonest means that one always correctly understands if their behavior is either honest or dishonest. self-perception of our morality is non-static and volatile. it's often at the moment we refuse to consider other perspectives that there is a clear indication we are not pursuing the truth, rather than simply and exclusively at the moment we can muster up evidence that we are right. socrates had much to say about truth, honesty and morality, and explained that if people really understood that their behavior was wrong — then they simply wouldn't do it — by definition. unfortunately, honesty in the western tradition has been marginalized to specific instances — perhaps because a thorough understanding of honesty collides with ideologies of all types. ideologies and idealism often exaggerate and suppress evidence in order to support their perspectives — at the expense of the truth. this process erodes the practice and understanding of honesty. to an ideologist the truth quite often becomes insignificant, what matters most are their ideals and what ever supports their desires to enjoy and spread those ideals.

the environment of the world has been damaged by the human beings for so many years without much notice.in recent years, however, more and more nations have begun to preserve the environment as they have realized the importance of it.
the nature has given us so much, but look at what we have done in return for its generosity.thousands upon thousands of trees have been cut down, including some precious species. numerous rivers and lakes have been drained only to set up modern buildings. priceless wildlife has turned into delicious dishes on the table.the air is being befouled by the smoke from the chimneys of the plants...
all this irritates the nature ,which results in the shortage of valuable resources, air pollution, countless acres of lands becoming deserts, etc.fortunately, many countries have got to know the seriousness of the problem and take active measures to preserve the environment.we sincerely hope that all the peo;le in the world willtake part in the campaign and join hands to protect the nature.

there was a man who had seven sons, but he had no daughter, greatly though he longed for one. at last his wife told him that they could again expect a child and, sure enough, when it was born it was a baby girl. there was great rejoicing, but the child was weak and puny, so weak that it had to be christened at once. the father told one of the boys to go quickly to the spring and fetch christening water; the other six ran along with him, and because each of them wanted to be the first to dip the jug into the well, it fell in and sank. so there they stood and didn't know what to do, and none of them dared go home. when they didn't come back their father got impatient and said:” i'll wager they've been playing some game again and forgotten all about it, the godless brats.“ he was afraid the little girl would have to die unbaptized, and in his rage he cried out:” i wish those boys would all turn into ravens.“ he'd scarcely spoken the words when he heard a whirring of wings in the air overhead, looked up and saw seven coal-black ravens flying away.

lost time is never found again. this is something which i learned very clearly last semester. i spent so much time fooling around that my grades began to suffer. i finally realized that something had to be done. it was time for a change.
now i have a new plan for using my time wisely. i have set my alarm clock ahead half an hour. this will give me a head start on the day. i have also decided to keep a log of what i do and when i do it. looking back on what isquo;ve done will give me some ideas on how to reorganize my time.
